Drawing the portrait through form, light and shadow

Working from a reference photo, workshop participants will learn how to develop a three-dimensional rendering from a two-dimensional surface. Over the course of the day, we will learn the basic idealized proportions of the head and will develop an understanding of planes, plane changes, how light and shadow create form, as well as how soft and hard edges help define three dimensions and depth perception. Whether the pencil is your go to tool for artistic expression, every artist can benefit from an in-depth exploration of how light and shadow coexist to create dimensionality.

Hard at work in the studio

COMING SOON!

ANOTHER two Day Portrait and Drawing workshop with Beaverbrook Gallery in Fredericton NB! June 10th and 11th.

This workshop focuses on drawing and painting the human head. Inspired by Beaverbrook’s Joseph Oppenheimer’s drawing and painting of Alice Bernheim, we will be working with our own photographic reference of a family member or friend and learn how to develop a three-dimensional rendering from a two-dimensional surface (your photograph). Over the course of 2 days, 6 hours per day, we will start with a drawing on day one and transfer that drawing to canvas on day two to create a painting. We will learn the basic idealized proportions of the head and will develop an understanding of planes, plane changes, how light and shadow create form, as well as, how soft and hard edges help define three dimensions and depth perception. Most importantly we will learn how to individualize the subject to best represent your loved one’s likeness.

Contact the Beaverbrook Gallery for more info.

Drawing Children

Join me for an online workshop through St. Lawrence College and learn the fundamentals in how to draw children, why their heads are so very difficult to render and create your own beautiful drawing while developing drawing skills that will trancend ALL SPACE AND TIME…a little dramatic??? Ok. The skills you will learn will be amazing and you will be able to apply what you learn to your own work…AND TRANSCEND SPACE AND TIME!

Let’s learn together as I go through the basic anatomy of children’s heads and features, provide personalized constructive criticism and show you a step by step demo of how I constructed and rendered the same portrait in real time.

Been a long time comin'!

Please join me in celebrating my first solo show in Canada in almost 10 years. I am honoured to invite you to the opening reception of my exhibit "The Human Condition, or is it?" at the Marianne Van Silfhout Gallery at St. Lawrence College in Brockville, ON. Sept. 20th, 2019, 7-9pm.

This exhibit is serendipitous to say the least. After moving to Kingston in November 2018 I opened my inbox that fateful day in February, the cold long winter just about killing any ounce of spirit left, to read the invitation to exhibit at the Marianne Van Silfhout Gallery and was absolutely exalted. I graciously accepted the galleries call to exhibit, without question. I feel blessed to be exhibiting at such a prestigious location and am in awe of how Heather Savage (gallery director) has displayed my work. It's by far the best exhibit I've ever had and it is my greatest pleasure to invite you to celebrate with me the evening of Sept. 20th.

If by whatever unfortunate circumstance you are unable to attend the event please do stop in whenever you have time. The exhibit will be hung until October 11th!

Thank you for your continued support and encouragement. It's not for naught!
I hope to see you there
